REGULATION

Regulation is the adjustment of all mechanical aspects of a piano's action to compensate for the effects of wear. Due to the compacting and settling of felt, cloth, and buckskin, the dimensional changes of wood and wool parts, and other types of wear, the performance of a piano's action will gradually decline over time. There are over 9,000 parts in a piano action, all of which must work together in a very precise way to be able to respond to a pianist's every command.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY PIANO NEEDS REGULATING?

Music is a complex vehicle for expression that relies on the musician's ability to use dynamics. It is imperative that a pianist have a smooth, even response throughout the range of the keyboard, with an action capable of  playing rapid passages and repeated notes evenly.

You may notice that the touch of your piano's keyboard is uneven, keys are not level with each other, or that keys are not functioning properly. If your piano shows a lack of response or decreased dynamic range, its action should be regulated

Every piano action has different needs and so there is no set price for an action regulation. Typically, a full regulation will take approximately 8 to 10 hours for a grand piano, and less for an upright.
